How Much Does It Cost to Charge an EV at Home?


The first time I seriously looked at an electric vehicle, the purchase price wasn't the only number I wanted to know.

I wanted to know what would happen after I parked it in my garage.

How much would charging an EV at home actually add to my electric bill every month?

That's a surprisingly easy question to answer once you know three things: how many miles you drive, how efficient the vehicle is, and what your utility charges per kilowatt-hour.

But there's another cost that gets mixed into the conversation: the charger itself.

So let's separate the two.

First, we'll calculate what it costs to put electricity into the car. Then we'll look at the cost of setting up home charging.

EV Home Charging Cost: Quick Answer

A useful starting formula is:

Monthly EV Charging Cost

Miles Driven ÷ Vehicle Efficiency × Electricity Rate

For example, suppose I drive 1,000 miles per month and my EV averages 3.5 miles per kWh.

The vehicle would need roughly:

1,000 ÷ 3.5 = 286 kWh

of energy delivered to the battery.

At the June 2026 U.S. residential average electricity price of 18.34 cents per kWh, that would equal about:

286 × $0.1834 = $52 per month

before accounting for charging losses.

Real charging isn't perfectly efficient, so the amount of electricity pulled from the wall will usually be higher than the energy that actually reaches the battery.

That's why the calculator below lets you include charging efficiency instead of pretending every kWh from your outlet ends up in the battery.

How Much Electricity Does an EV Use?

EV efficiency is often shown as miles per kilowatt-hour, or mi/kWh.

The idea is simple.

If your EV averages 4 miles per kWh, every 4 miles of driving requires about 1 kWh stored in the battery.

If it averages 3 miles per kWh, the same trip requires more electricity.

These are illustrative calculations, not estimates for a particular EV.

Your actual efficiency can change with vehicle size, speed, temperature, heating and air-conditioning use, driving style, tires and other factors.

Don't Forget Charging Losses

This is one of the easiest costs to overlook.

If the battery needs 286 kWh, your house may need to supply more than 286 kWh because charging equipment and the vehicle itself consume some energy during the charging process.

For example, if you assume 90% overall charging efficiency:

286 ÷ 0.90 = about 318 kWh from the wall

At 18.34 cents per kWh:

318 × $0.1834 = about $58 per month

That is about $6 more than a calculation that ignores charging losses.

It doesn't sound huge in one month, but I would rather include it than make the EV look artificially cheaper.

What If You Live in New York?

This is where the national-average calculation stops being very useful for my own household.

New York electricity is expensive.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported an average residential electricity price of 29.49 cents per kWh in New York in June 2026.

Use the same example:

  • 1,000 miles per month
  • 3.5 miles/kWh
  • 90% charging efficiency

The house would supply roughly 318 kWh per month.

At 29.49 cents per kWh:

318 × $0.2949 = about $94 per month.

That's roughly $36 more per month than the same driving example at the June 2026 U.S. residential average.

So when someone tells me what it costs to charge an EV, my first question is:

Where do you live, and what do you pay for electricity?

How Much Does EV Charging Cost Per Mile?

Cost per mile makes it easier to compare different driving situations.

Using our 1,000-mile example at the U.S. average electricity rate:

318 kWh from the wall × $0.1834 = about $58.

Then:

$58 ÷ 1,000 miles = about 5.8 cents per mile.

Using the New York electricity example:

$94 ÷ 1,000 miles = about 9.4 cents per mile.

Again, those aren't universal EV costs. They're outputs from the assumptions we're using.

Your own electricity rate and real-world vehicle efficiency are what matter.

Level 1 vs Level 2: Does the Charger Change Your Electricity Cost?

One mistake I made when I first started looking into home charging was mixing up charging speed with electricity price.

Level 2 charging is much faster than charging from a standard household outlet, but the charger itself doesn't magically make your utility's electricity cheaper.

What changes most dramatically is convenience.

For a driver covering a lot of miles every day, being able to restore substantial range overnight can be far more practical than waiting on Level 1 charging.

But moving to Level 2 can create a new upfront cost:

the charger and its electrical installation.

That's why I included an optional installation-cost field in the calculator.

What Does a Level 2 Charger Really Cost?

This is where I would stop using national averages and start getting actual quotes.

The hardware is only one part of the project.

Your electrician may need to consider:

  • Available electrical-panel capacity
  • Charger amperage
  • Distance from the panel to the garage or parking location
  • Wire and conduit requirements
  • Indoor versus outdoor installation
  • Permitting
  • Whether a new circuit is required
  • Whether the home's electrical service needs an upgrade

A straightforward installation near an adequate electrical panel is a very different project from running a long circuit across a house or upgrading the service.

What About the Federal Home EV Charger Tax Credit?

This is another place where older EV articles can now be misleading.

The federal Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit under Section 30C previously provided qualifying homeowners with a credit for eligible charging equipment installed at a primary residence in an eligible census tract.

But the law changed.

According to current IRS guidance, the Section 30C credit is not allowed for property placed in service after June 30, 2026.

So if you're installing a home EV charger now, in September 2026, I would not include that former federal credit in my project budget.

State, utility and local EV charging programs are separate and can change independently.

My approach would be the same as with any home-energy incentive:

Verify the current program first. Spend the money second.

Should You Charge at Night?

Maybe.

The answer depends entirely on your utility rate plan.

Some utilities offer time-of-use or EV-specific electricity pricing where off-peak charging can cost less than charging during expensive periods.

Other households pay essentially the same rate regardless of when the car charges.

If my utility offered meaningfully cheaper overnight electricity, I would want the car or charger scheduled to take advantage of it.

For a household adding hundreds of kWh of new electricity consumption each month, even a modest difference in the per-kWh rate can add up over a year.

The Number I'd Check Before Buying an EV

If I were deciding whether an EV fits my household budget, I wouldn't start with somebody else's charging bill.

I'd pull out my own electric bill.

Then I'd write down:

My monthly driving

The EV's realistic efficiency
÷
Charging efficiency

My actual electricity rate
=

My estimated home charging cost

Then I would add the charger and installation cost separately.

That gives me a much more useful number than asking, “How much does an EV cost to charge?”

My Bottom Line

For a household driving around 1,000 miles a month, home charging can add dozens of dollars to the monthly electric bill, but the exact number depends heavily on the vehicle and local electricity price.

And here in New York, I wouldn't rely on a low national-average electricity estimate when making the decision.

I would use my own utility rate.

The bigger surprise for some homeowners may not be the electricity at all.

It may be what happens when they ask an electrician to install Level 2 charging and discover that the existing panel, wiring or service needs additional work.

That's the next layer of the EV ownership-cost calculation.
