How much does it actually cost to run your washing machine for one load?

The answer depends on your washer, utility rates, and how often you do laundry.

How the Washing Machine Cost Calculator Works

The basic calculation has two parts:

Electricity cost = annual kWh × electricity rate

and:

Water and sewer cost = annual gallons ÷ 1,000 × combined water and sewer rate

We then divide those annual figures by the standardized annual load assumption used for the published washer data.

ENERGY STAR says its estimated annual energy and water use for clothes washers is based on 295 loads per year, or roughly six loads per week.

This matters because the annual number printed for a washer is not necessarily based on your household's actual laundry habits.


What Should You Enter for Annual Energy Use?

The best number is the annual kWh figure for the specific washer you own or are considering buying.

For ENERGY STAR-listed washers, annual energy use is an estimate under standardized conditions.

There is another detail that is easy to miss:

The ENERGY STAR annual energy figure includes the energy used by the washer and the estimated energy required to heat the wash water using an electric water heater.

That means you should not take this annual kWh figure and then add another full electric water-heating estimate on top of it. Doing so could double-count part of the energy cost.


What Should You Enter for Water Use?

Use the washer's published annual water consumption when available.

ENERGY STAR publishes annual water use in gallons per year for certified clothes washers. Like its annual energy figure, this estimate is based on 295 loads per year.

That lets us estimate:

Gallons per load = annual gallons ÷ 295

A washer rated at 4,500 gallons per year, for example, works out to approximately:

4,500 ÷ 295 = 15.3 gallons per load

Your actual consumption can vary by cycle, load size, machine settings, and washer design.


Do Not Forget the Sewer Charge

Water is only part of the utility cost.

Many U.S. households also pay wastewater or sewer charges, which can make the effective cost of each gallon considerably higher than the water-supply charge alone.

EPA WaterSense estimates a 2024 national residential average of:

Example: What Does One Load Cost?

Consider a hypothetical washer with:

  • 120 kWh annual energy use
  • 4,500 gallons annual water use
  • 18.44¢/kWh electricity
  • $16.83 per 1,000 gallons for water and sewer

At 18.44¢ per kWh:

120 kWh × $0.1844 = $22.13 per year

For water and sewer:

4,500 gallons ÷ 1,000 × $16.83 = $75.74 per year

Combined:

$22.13 + $75.74 = $97.87

Dividing by 295 standardized loads gives approximately:

$0.33 per load

This example covers the utility components represented by these inputs. It does not include detergent, fabric products, maintenance, repairs, or the purchase price of the washer.


Electricity Is Not Always the Biggest Cost

The example above illustrates something important.

When looking only at the washer's direct utility costs, water and wastewater charges can be just as important as electricity — and sometimes more important.

That is why comparing washers only by annual kWh can give an incomplete picture.

A machine that uses less water can create savings in more than one place:

  • less water purchased from the utility
  • less wastewater sent to the sewer system
  • less water that may need to be heated

The exact benefit depends on your local utility rates and washing habits.


Cold Water vs. Hot Water Washing

Wash temperature can materially change the energy required to do laundry.

Heating water requires energy, so colder wash settings generally reduce the energy associated with water heating.

However, when using an ENERGY STAR annual energy figure in this calculator, remember that the standardized annual energy estimate already incorporates assumed water-heating energy.

Front Load vs. Top Load: Why Washer Design Matters

Two washing machines with similar capacities can have very different energy and water requirements.

Front-loading machines are especially interesting for operating-cost comparisons because water efficiency affects both the water bill and the amount of water that may need to be heated.

But the cheapest washer to operate is not automatically the cheapest washer to own.

You also need to consider:

  • purchase price
  • capacity
  • expected life
  • repair costs
  • water consumption
  • energy consumption
  • how often your household does laundry

A small difference per load becomes more meaningful when multiplied across hundreds or thousands of wash cycles.

Not necessarily.

Lower operating cost is only one side of the decision.

The default electricity rate of 18.44 cents per kWh reflects the U.S. Energy Information Administration's reported U.S. residential average for May 2026.

The default combined water and wastewater rate of $16.83 per 1,000 gallons is EPA WaterSense's published 2024 national residential estimate.
